Kickstart Our Launch

Hi viewers we just launched our first project on Kickstarter! It's my debut novel that I wrote for NaNoWriMo this year. Daemons in the Mist a Young Adult urban-fantasy paranormal romance novel set in modern day San Francisco. I am currently finishing up the novel to be edited for publication and it will be our first release at Korat Publishing.

Greetings KatGirl Studio Followers that was a crazy summer wasn't it? We were so busy we hardly had time to work on any personal projects. But now that we are swinging into fall the Studio blog should see more frequent updates.

This image was intended for Illustration Friday's topic "Old Fashioned" but I had too much client work to get it done in time. It's a stylized self portrait of me and our studio kitty Crash the Stampede in Steampunk Victorian wear. I will be finishing this image for my Halloween themed avatar, but I thought I would share a little work in progress.

Some of you who have been staying up to date with the going-ons at KatGirl Studio though our Purr Post newsletter may remember that this summer I went 100% digital with my art. It is not immediately noticeable from the outside looking in, and in truth 90% of the people we meet at shows are down right shocked to learn my illustrations are digital. The reasons I made the leap to 100% digital are two fold.

It saves me time.

I'm not saying I spent less time on the actually painting or that digital is easier than traditional media (trust me it's not). What I mean is that when I still drew my illustrations traditionally I would have to do alot of scanning and clean up work. A typical illustration would go like this:

I would scan my thumbnail and blow it up to the correct size then print it out, tape it to my desk and put a piece of vellum over it. Once I had my sketch down I would tape down another piece of vellum and draw a clean copy of the image. I would then have to scan it, usually in two parts since most of my illustrations are larger than the standard 8.5x11 paper. I would then have to clean it up in Photoshop before transferring it over to Painter. That's alot of time spent not painting, don't you think?

Now that I have gone 100% digital I can work up some quick concept thumbs quickly in Painter 11 (usually at 2am). Once I pick the one I like I just drag it into a new file and size it in a matter of seconds. I can then either sketch directly on it or turn it's opacity down and work up the sketch on a layer above it. Inking the line work is the same process. Or I can "ink" it in pencil to keep the paper grain texture. The painting part of the process is pretty much the same for my illustrations as it was before.

It also means I can get work to clients faster and make changes for them quicker as well without having to sacrifice quality.

The other great part about working digitally is I can also easily show the step by steps by either turning on or off certain layers or by cloning a flattened version of the file every so often.

It saves the world.

Ok it doesn't actually save the world but it does save alot of trees and make our studio more Green. By doing all my work on the computer I don't use the ink, paper, vellum, tape, pencil lead and erasers I use to.

Illustrators Beware! Please Read and Share.

Dear fellow illustrators it is my professional obligation to inform you all of the unethical actions of one Canadian publisher Three Bears Publishing and their representative Ashley Carleton.

On April 7th 2009 I was contacted by Ashley Carleton of Three bears Publishing to do a 51 page picture book consisting of 25 1/2 spreads plus cover.

Along the way they convinced me into doing numerous character designs and an extra page for no additional compensation. The projects original deadline was Aug. 30th but was then moved to Sept. 30th and later left open because the company consistently failed to provide me with the illustration suggestions of what they wanted me to illustrate and would take weeks to answer my emailed questions.

When I submitted the revised character designs Ashley Carleton said in reference to one of the characters 'I love your revised character sketch of the girl... I LOVE her.'

On October 15th 2009 after I had submitted 95% of the layout drawings and was awaiting answers and the final spreads Ashley Carleton sent an email stating.

'By the way, you're[sic] sketches look fabulous!'

I submitted the last sketch on Oct. 30th. On Nov. 3rd I was told by Ashley Carleton,

'Thank you for the sketches. I am compiling a list of suggested additions and changes to some sketches. In the meantime, you can definitely start to color the following sketches that are perfect as they are.'

If your following along, you may have noticed that only a few days before she said the sketches were "fabulous."

I informed her that I could not start painting because she had only approved the color key for one of the three characters.

On November 3rd Ashley Carleton said via email. 'I hope to reply regarding colors for the characters clothes in the next 24 hours.' To date I still have never received those color keys.

We both agreed that no painting would start until the changes were submitted to me.

And this is where everything takes a dive towards horrible.

On November 19th, 2009 I finally get an email back saying they will send me the changes to the layouts within a week.

More weeks pass and my emails go unanswered. On January 4th, 2010 I receive an email from Ashley Carleton stating: 'I am in the final stages of formulating my comments, and can promise you that i[sic] will email you all of my comments by Wednesday of this week, just 2 days from now.'

I receive a few more emails promising to have them to me in a few days. They however did not send me the suggested changes then, or ever.
At this point it has taken them longer to formulate their changes than it took me to draw the 40 illustrations.

On February 13th, 2010 I receive an email from Ashley Carleton stating that they would not be paying me for the months of work (40 drawings covering 52 pages plus cover) and instead would like to draw up a new contract to have me paint someone else's drawings for only 46% of the original fee for a now 31 page book. They claim that because they have decided to not use the drawings they have no reason to pay for them.

I felt it was my professional obligation to inform you all of this so no one else will fall prey to Three Bears Publishing. Please share this and repost it anywhere you can think of. The more who know the less likely someone will fall into this trap.

Invasion of the Purple Bunnies

Hey KatGairl Studio Viewers I decided to take up the Illustration Friday Challenge this past week for the first time. So without further ado here is my submission.

Invasion of the Purple Bunnies

The Question you must ask your self is, do these creatures come in peace or is their cuteness merely a deception?

This image was done for Illustration Friday. The word was Propagate.

Propagate: ‘To pass along to offspring and or to cause to spread out and affect a greater number or greater area.’

The first things that came to mind were all those frakkin brooms Mickey created in The Sorcerer's Apprentice and rabbits. And rabbits make me think of purple bunnies. Purple bunnies are an inside joke that started in our theatre in middle school. I don’t know who started it but it was one of those never ending songs that went.

“Purple bunnies, I hate purple bunnies they drive me crazy. Crazy! I’m not crazy, I’m in a room of purple bunnies. Purple bunnies, I hate purple bunnies they drive me crazy…”

And it would go on like that forever. The purple bunnies became so wide spread it infiltrated our high school. Where we would eat purple peep bunnies and laugh manically. I’m pretty sure people just thought we were crazy.

This was the first time i have ever done a SiFi image or painted planets, spaceships and space for that matter.

I'm looking forward to doing another one of these challenges since the force me to get faster at painting. This Illustration took 2 days.

1) Tell us a bit about who you are and what to you do professionally as an artist.

My name is Alicia "Kat" Dillman and I own and operate KatGirl Studio. I'm a profession freelance illustrator. I graduated with a BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art in San Francisco in 2008. I mainly do work for children's publishing and book covers. I am currently in the process of illustrating 3 children's picture books and writing two Young Adult novels.

2) People have a lot of ideas about what artists careers and jobs will be like - what assumptions did you have that turned out to be wrong? What turned out to be right?

While going to school our instructors told us that the only starving artists were those who possessed poor technical ability or business skills. I was assured as one of the top students I would have no problem finding work. Then the economy tanked and I graduated during the worst year in economic history since the Great Depression. Jobs and projects, even badly paying ones, were scarce. It really didn't matter how good you were. If you weren't already known there was nothing out there for you. It was really hard but recently things have started to pick up a bit. It's nice to know that my career as an Illustrator can only really go up from here.

3) Do you have any interesting insights to share on your career in art that may help people who want to break into the field? How did you get in, why, what worked for you, and how did your hobbies/interests play into it.

I got into Illustration after trying out 3 other majors in college. I was originally going to transfer to the Academy of Art for Theatrical Fashion Design but got on the wrong tour bus on Academy Day and ended up at the Illustration building instead. Their department looked more interesting so I signed up and never looked back.

I don't know that I have really "gotten in" just yet but I'm trying really hard to work my way into the industry. What has seemed to work the best is having a strong web presence. I have my work on one of the top portfolio sites for Children's Illustrators and a lot of my clients find me through there. I also have my work on free portfolio sites, I have a blog I post is nearly every week, as well as a strong twitter following. Also had a table or a booth at 4 conventions, 3 Art & Wine festivals and 1 conference in the past 10 months. Meeting people face to face is very important to building name recognition and strengthening you fan base.

4) Freelance or employed by someone else as an artist - what are the advantages and disadvantages to you?

Employment: If you are employed by someone else you generally own nothing. Everything you create, every idea, is owned by someone else. The advantage is that you have that job security. You will get a pay check 5 days a week, not just when projects come in. I would love to work for a company like Pixar but in 2008 and still now coveted art positions at companies were far and few between. Working for a company is a good gig, if you can get it.

Freelance: Everything you create is owned by you unless you sell those rights. You have complete control over the things you create and how they are used. You get larger chunks of money for your skills. You can work from a home studio, saving money on everything from gas to food. The disadvantage is that you don't get that steady pay check. You have to front all costs for projects until you are paid. It's common for checks to take 30-90 days to come in after a project is completed and some never come in. There's also the health care problem. Because our country doesn't have universal health care or something like it freelancers can very rarely afford to get their own health care plans. Those are the disadvantages most think of, but they forget to subtle ones that afflict freelancers like depression and isolation. Unless you work in a shared studio you spent most days alone without human contact unless you live with someone or go outside to get lunch or run errands. Some people just don't do will with that isolation others thrive on it. I am a people person to it was really hard to adjust to spending my days alone after 20 years of being in school. If you're like me I recommend chatting with other freelancers or friends via an instant messaging system, Twitter or FaceBook Chat while you work. Bounce ideas of them and share preliminary work with them if your project contract allows. Its kinda like having co-workers all over the world. It will help maintain good mental health and moral.

5) What social media and internet tools helped your career and which ones do you recommend.

It goes without saying that you need your own website. If you want clients to view you as a professional you need your own website. In this day in age it is the single most important thing to have as an artisan, illustrator or other graphical artist. If you are not tech savvy hire someone to make one for you, bribe a tech savvy friend or as a last resort at least have a blog site. I recommend Blogspot which has all kinds of widgets to help you. I strongly recommend having a Twitter. If you adopt only one new technology into your career make it this one. It is imperative that you have one and use it frequently. It keeps my fans up to date on what I'm doing and helps strengthen the connection they feel towards me. It also helps me connect with potential clients and gives them a view into the person I am.. Don't forget art directors, agents, editors and publishers tweet too. You can also glean valuable information that is not widely available anywhere else.

Have a Deviant Art account its free and if you get a paid account for the extra features its only $30 for a year. I use it to search for reference and inspiration. I post my preliminary work and work in progress images for my fans. I make blog posts about events we will be at or new products in our shop. I use its stat feature to find out the most popular pieces I've created. It also has a widget that hooks up my twitter feed to my DA account giving me more ways to reach my fans and connect with them.

6) In an age of technology changes, economic upheaval, and companies moving into each other's spaces, where do you see artists like yourself being?

Right where we always have been. Though these things may change the way we work it does not change the need for creative people. I myself am always at the forefront of technology because I use it in nearly every aspect of my work. I am also the daughter of a computer engineer and have never experienced the technological reluctance that some artist's have. I have to say to everyone reading this: avoid and fear technology at your own peril, for the industry will have no qualms about passing you over for one more willing to move forward.

7) Any further insights to share?

It is sad that artists are so undervalued in our society when everything you see in your day to day lives had to pass through the hands of Illustrators, graphic designs or artisans to get there. There's an anonymous quote out there on the internet that reads: "In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field." Never forget how valuable and rare your skills are. Never let others diminish you, pay you less than you deserve or convince you to work for "exposure" alone. You are not some picture pony out there for the amusement of others you are a trained thoroughbred race horse. As a professional illustrator, artist or graphic designer you deserve the same respect given to any other highly skilled profession of any other field.

APE 2009 Recap

APE Exhibitors Mixer at Last Gasp
The Mixer was held in the Last Gasp warehouse and offices. Nothing more awesome that mingling and drinks in rooms filled with books, carnival side show art and two headed stuffed oddities. We hung out with Emily Martin and her friends from Megamoth Studio next to the Sprectrum books. I even found the YOUR FRIEND THE RAT Little Golden book from Pixar I’ve been looking for for two years.

APE
As it turned out table was in a less than stellar location at APE but we made the best of it. About 2 hours into the event on Saturday I lost my voice. Luckily I had my wonderful table mate and boyfriend Aleric to help out and make me a cute sign. Thank you to all the wonderful people who stopped by to support our studio!

CAM Alternative Press Expo Party: Monsters and Mayhem
On Saturday night Aleric, Erin, Dan and I catched the bus to the Cartoon Art Museum’s Monsters and Mayhem party. The party was tons of fun! Where else would you get to drink beer while sitting in a web comic’s exhibit making Halloween masks out of paper plates, ribbon and crayons? The Disney’s Sleeping Bauty exhibit was fantastic. If you live near SF the Cartoon Art Museum’s current shows are much see!

KatGirl Studio Equipment

Because a lot of people have asked me in the past and at the conference here is a list of all of the equipment I use. If you have any questions about any of these items, how to use them or the best places to get them please always feel free to ask me.

Computer: I have an upgraded Dell Inspiron 6000 with a frosted monitor.

Programs: I use Photoshop CS3, Painter X for art and Flash CS4, Illustrator CS4, and Dreamweaver CS4 for my website.

Tablet: I have a 9x12 Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. They are no longer available since they have the new Intuos 4.

Monitor Calibration: I use the Spyder 2 Pro color calibration software by Datacolor. Once again they no longer make 2 because they have moved on to the Spyder 3 Pro.

Printer Calibration: I have a PrintFix Pro also by Datacolor.

Printer: I use the Canon Pixma Pro 9000 and 8 color dye-jet 13x19 fine art printer. I use it for all my printing except for business cards & postcards. All my portfolio pieces, mini books, and the book dummy I had at the conference where printed on this printer.

Printer Paper: Although they make many shiny papers for the Pixma I use the Matte Photo paper for most of my printing because it has a nice velvety look to the art. It also comes in 4x6 and 13x19 size or you can get the Premium Fine Art Matte paper honestly they are pretty much the same. I print my Giclee’s in my shop on 13x19 100% Cotton Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper.

Mat Cutter: I use a Logan 650 Framer's Edge Mat Cutter.

Drawing Paper: All my sketches are done on Canson Tracing Paper and then I trace a clean copy onto a piece of Canson Vidalon Vellum.

Drawing Materials: For all non-photorealistic pieces I draw I use .5 dark blue Uni Color mechanical pencil lead. It’s made by Mitaubishi but the only place I know of to get it as at one of these stores. My mech. pencil is a PaperMate Pro Touch II.

SCBWI 2009 Conference day 4

Day 4 of the conference started off with a key note by Dinah Stevenson:

May the 4 C’s Be With You: An Editor Suggests Strategies for Hard Times
Creativity: imagination, thoughts, what if’s, making stuff up.
Be brave enough to live creatively.
Creativity is something you do, not something you search for outside yourself.
It is an endless journey to discover yourself. The work of art is what you do after you find yourself.
Saying what you mean in your own way is being creative.
Write something only you can create.
Craft: craft resides in the details.
Community: never let anyone tell you that reading is not important.
Chocolate: you are doing a difficult job and for that you deserve a reward.

And after a very short break was followed by the wonderful Ingrid Law the author of Savvy which sold out before I could get a copy.

Writing Magic: From the Head to the Heart
Put everything you experience into your work because it is a part of who you are.
Wrote savvy after her previous book’s 45 rejections.

I was so captivated by her story I forgot to write much of anything down. She is a fantastic storyteller.

After the morning key notes I went to another of Steven Malk’s sessions:

What to Expect When You’re Expecting: An Agents Guide from Query Letter to Published Book
Writers House is one of the largest independent agencies in the world.
His grandmother opened one of the first children’s book stores in the world in South Africa called the White Rabbit.
Slow down- rushing will never ever help you. Think about your career as a whole not about getting the project out there before it’s ready.
Understand that all your decisions will have consequences.
Always right a personal letter not a form letter.
Don’t leave anything to chance.
Focus on what you can control.
Make everything you can is flawless.
Don’t let anyone else outwork you.
Query letters: make them count.
What made them [the agent or editor] seem like the right person to send your letter too.
Query Letters should not be more than a page.
You need to make sure the agent accepts multi sub queries and state that you are doing so in the letter.
If one person picks you give the others a chance to make an offer as well even if you still go with the first person.
He likes the phone more than email.
Three types of deals:
The publisher takes advantage of the author/artist and the creator walks away feeling resentful.
Both sides walk away happy.
The publisher walks away feeling bullied.
Understand everything that is in your contract.
Strike the balance between the eager author and the over eager author.
Make stores aware of your book before it comes out.
Start with regional book stores and organizations and work outward when starting to build networks.
Your book will succeed over time not right away.
Don’t obsess over your Amazon rating.
Everything you do has a long standing effect.
Your hard work will pay off.
Publishers said All in a Day was too Californian but it got a lot of blog coverage and is now the writers first best seller

After lunch I went to Susan Sherman’s session:

The Publishing Process: An Overview of the Design & Art Direction Process
Walter Lorraine discovered Katrina Hyman
Computers liberated design
They read everything as it comes in.
Good manuscripts circulate around to everyone.
They work on the book as a team; art director, editor, author and illustrator.
They look to illustrators to expand the manuscript.
She likes receiving emails with a line about yourself and a few low rez attachments and link to website.
Art circulates around the office much the same way as the manuscripts.
The characters are more important that anything on a cover.
She starts with kooky fonts first then refines them till she finds the one that’s perfect.

After that we had our final key note by Kathleen Duey:

Transmutation: Books that Matter
Write down conversations you had at the conference.
Go back and annotate your notes.
When you go home go through the business cards of those you met and write down things about them. Contact everyone who gave you a card and thank them for talking to you.
Stay in touch with the people you met here.
Put quotes on the wall that people said here at the conference that meant something to you.

After all the wonderful sessions and key notes were done I went to collect my big back of books then have signed and meet some of the people who had meant a lot to me growing up.

I got to meet Karen Cushman whom I had wanted to meet since I was 12. I am dyslexic and reading was very difficult for me when I was young. I actually hated read a lot until in the 7th grade we read the Midwife’s Apprentice. I absolutely loved the book and historical fiction and went on to read her other books on my own. Thanks to her I now love reading, read every day, not because I have to but because I want to. We also own 7 book cases over flowing with books. I got hard covers of my favorites of hers The Midwife’s Apprentice and Catherine Called Birdy signed and soft covers signed for my two little cousins.

Next I got to meet Holly Black and tell her how fantastic her speech was. I was just going to take a picture of her but she insisted we take a picture together. So here’s us leaning over the table. Oddly enough the Spiderwick book they had for sale at the SCBWI book store was the same one I had brought from home. I did however have to pre movie copy of the Field Guide.

After Holly Black I went to get my copy of Terrible Things signed by Eve Bunting.

While having a friend hold my place I ran over to have Sherman Alexie sign a copy of his book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian before he left. His speech was so compelling I am greatly looking forward to reading his book.

I also got to meet David Wiesner whom I have wanted to meet since I was 8 and Tuesday came out. Like I said before reading was extremely hard for me so his wordless picture books were some of my favorite books. I managed to find a hard copy of Tuesday at a Borders half an hour from me so I got that signed along with hard copies of The Three Pigs, Sector 7 and Flotsam.

After waiting in David’s impossibly long line I had just enough time to catch Ingrid Law before she felt. I told her how fantastic I thought her verbal storytelling was and that I would have had her sign a copy of her book for me if they hadn’t sold out before I could get one. Savvy is next on my list of books I need to go pick up.

With my trove of signed books in tow I went to meet up with my boy friend in the lobby and found out they had been filming an episode of Lie to Me all day in the pool/bar area. We hung out for awhile to let traffic get less hectic and then headed out to or next hotel in Anaheim. On the way we saw someone cruising down the freeway in their Tesla Roadster. We got to our nice comfy hotel and got to watch to fireworks from Disneyland. And for the first time in many weeks I actually got to relax.

Examining the Strange: The Basics of Fantasy Writing

Her life is very much like Spiderwick
Read both adult and kids fantasy
Children’s books are very genre less
“Fiction lets you try on the life of someone else.”
“Fantasy is the language of metaphor.”
Changelings = alienation
Werewolf = fear of hurting others
Be careful with your metaphors when writing fantasy.
Fantasy must contain magic and wonder; the fantastical.
“All stories are fantasies; some are just more honest about it than others.”
“You have to believe in the fantastical in which you are reading.”
“Fantasy is very close to Historical Fiction because like Historical Fiction you have to take the reader to a place they can never go.”
Closed fantasy = magic is hidden, like in harry potter.
Open fantasy = magic is common place and normal, like in The Lord of the Rings.
Day logic = magic works the same every time like science
Night logic = more intuitive but not the same every time
Holly Black’s Crazy Fantasy Plotting Theory: Fantasy must have a human story and a fantastical story.The resonance in a story is between those two points.

How to craft a Winning Query Letter: Secrets to Keep You Out of the Rejection Pile

He is an sgent at writers house
“One voice of decent is louder than eight voices of approval.”
He takes a lot of people on from the slush pile
Great query letters trump referrals everyday
In a Query Letter start by saying hello. Then tell the agent of editor you would like to send your manuscript. Then tell them a little about the book then tell a little about yourself.
A query Letter should never be more than a page.
Never apologize for being new or unpublished.
You don’t need colored paper or fancy graphics, or packaging for your query letter.
Always send the first 5-15 pages
Always know who you are sending your query too. Never say “dear agent” or “to whom it may concern”
Always use specific compliments to the agent or editor never insincere or generalized compliments.
Never say “…I would like to send you my fictional novel…”
Never use “what if” questions in query when describing your book.
Don’t say what genre it is just say it’s a novel the agent or editor will know what genre it belongs in.
Don’t make your synopsis vague. Make it unique, original and specific.
Don’t toot your own horn just let the work speak for itself
Never say your manuscript is sure to be a best seller, blockbuster, or award winner.
Don’t tell them that readers like your work or what they think people think of your work.
Include SASE with your query letter
Always put your whole name so the agent/editor knows who to address
Put contact info at the bottom of the email but the top of a letter
Don’t use the word quirky it’s basically like saying your character is “interesting.”
Always show who your character loves and who loves them.
Offering an agent or publisher a 6 week exclusive on your work before submitting to others is perfectly acceptable.
Always follow up via email, don’t call!
Put the first 5 pages under the query is sending it by snail –mail. When sending via email paste into email after your query.
Always say which works the agent represented that you liked in the beginning of your letter.
In the query if it is not a standalone book mention in one line that you are working on the next book or that it is a series.
Mention in your letter if your manuscript is either an exclusive or multi submission because agents and editors like to know upfront.
Log line = this meets that
Mentioning the age of the character in your query letter is important.

Creating and Editing a Wordless Picture Book

He makes mini book dummies at the sketch stage, the drawing stage and the final art stage.
At the moment things change it can’t be ambiguous it has to be stated.
In a Wordless Picture Book dialogue should only be used to move the story forwards.
He uses model magic for making character models.

After the afternoon session we had a key note by Elizabeth Law.

From Jonny Tremain to Edward Cullen: How Children’s Publishing is Changing, and How to Meet the Challenges head-on

Egmont Books is run as a children’s charity. They have only 8 people in their whole company.
She is accepting anything sent to her in the next 3 months via email attachment with SCBWI LA in the sub line. ElizabethLaw@egmont.com
She is looking for stories with strong concepts.
YA hard cover is on the rise and growing.
Books must have Good pitch-able hooks; this meets that. Know what your story is.
She relies on agents to screen for her to weed out stuff
Know who you’re writing for but only write what fits for you not what’s hot! Never be afraid to ask questions.

In the evening I hung out with some super nice people in the Hotel lobby Lounge including Marietta Zacker. I never did run into Marietta again on Monday and would like to thank her again for chatting with us. If anyone has her email please let me know.

Day 2 started off with:

Creating an Extraordinary Picture Book
Kadir Nelson: Extraordinary picture books are those that speak to a personal and universal truth.
Eve Bunting: Extraordinary picture books must last a long time, have heart and must speak to the creators and readers.
Melinda Long: Extraordinary picture books must have a strong appeal to both children and adults.
Eve Bunting: Extraordinary picture books should make you feel strongly in whatever way it intends.
Kadir Nelson: you need a personal connection with the story.

How has the economy affected publishing?
Brenda: publishing has gotten leaner; they like to see more finished work.
Sarah: lists are being cut. Work has to be very polished. She only reps non Picture Books.
Stephen: you have to celebrate when things seem the bleakest.
Dan: books are selling for less than before but they are still selling. Writers house.com email queries and first 5 pages in email.
Kelly: the market is hurting less in children’s than the adult market. Summer is usually a dead month but is doing well this year. Publishers today are less willing to take risks than before.
How much time they spent working on the editing vs selling process?
Sarah: spends the most time looking for talent and voice than polish. She is looking for potential. She does a lot of work with people to get you the best deal possible.
Stephen: wants to be a nurturer of careers not just projects.
Sarah: wants to help people build their careers.
What is the one big thing in contracts to watch out for?
Make sure the discount royalty isn’t too low.
The out of print clause.
Last words:
Brenda: only; connect.
Sarah: squeeze the juice from the fruit.
Stephen: every a good book has a home
Kelly: everyone here wants to fall in love with your work. That thrill of finding new talent.
Marietta: make sure you communicate it and communicate it well.
Dan: don’t harp on themes and ideas in your query letter. Show how your character is quirky don’t just say they are.

WS worth saying. It should be fundamental.
NB Never be Boring. You can escape this with a little humor. A yawn may be bad manners but it is an honest opinion.
AAA The aaaah factor at the end of a book. Because Picture Books are short ever word counts. Have the ending in your mind before you write the story.
BP be persistent. Be proud.
Don’t rush to send your book out. Wait 2 weeks and then the read it again.
Write something worth saying
Dare to be original
A bird does not sing because it has a message it sings because it has a song.

The portfolio show was awesome and I came away with only a few business cards left at my table. All the mini portfolio books, mini coloring books and postcards thankfully went home with those who viewed my portfolio.

The Pool Side Gala was fantastic fun again this year and the Hyatt staff was kind enough to bring me a Grilled Turkey sandwich since I was allergic to all the food they were serving.

Sherman Alexie was fantastic! His speech was so compelling I simply had to go out and get his book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

Illustrators make up about 40% of his list.

Educate yourself:
About the market. Spend time in independent stores along with big name book stores. Also look at award list books.
You should have a sub to horn book.
Look at Barbra Cooney’s work.

Have a career model:
Think about how you would like to fit in the market.
Find models and analyze their careers

Don’t Dibble Dabble:
Don’t just make children books a hobby, it must be a passion.

Only you can own your career decisions:
Each decision you make affects your career. Everything is important.

Getting your work out into the world:
Your portfolio tells them what type of person you are. The time you take to layout your portfolio says a lot about you.
Have 12 pieces in your portfolio but no more than 20 pieces.
Show them you understand the conventions of children’s books. And that you can tell a visual story. Always show a few sequential spreads.
Be neurotic about your portfolio.
Look at Marla Frazee’s work more closely.

Send out promo postcards early spring, early fall and summer.

Put a few spreads from a story and then mention the whole dummy is available.

Courtney Bongiolatti: simplify spreads, make everything there for a reason.
Jordan Brown: People will always interpret your book in way you will not to attend.

#1 Companion books not a series.
#2 Good pace, it keeping the momentum going. Making it impossible to put down.
#3 Books are set in real modern world not an outside fantasy world. It’s normal and modern.
#4 It appeal to boys and girls equally.
#5 Cover design! The covers are awesome.

In the Afternoon I went to Elizabeth Parisi’s session Book Covers: How to fit your style into the current market.
Design books that look good at 1 inch tall.
Make covers simpler and more iconic.
Don’t show too much of the character because the reader likes to see themselves as the character especially in YA.

Covers are given usually a 1-2 month deadline. You are usually given the first two weeks you make rough designs.
For picture books you really need and agent.

Betty Birney

At the Wine and Cheese Reception I met a lot of the cool people I follow on twitter like Cynthea Liu, Fran Cannon Slayton, Elizabeth Dulemba. And a few awesome people I met last year who knew me as “the girl with the purple kitty cards” apparently Kiki has made my cards infamous!

The Illustrator Social was even better than last year. Met many friendly illustrators I saw throughout the conference. David Diaz was kind enough to advise me on which pieces I should leave in and take out of my portfolio before the show on Saturday.

The night ended once again with a bunch of us hanging out in the lobby chatting and sharing our work.

Now that the Conference and our first art & wine festival are over I finally have time to actually write about my trip. I’ve going to split the posts up by day so it doesn’t get to long.

Day 1 Thursday August 6th:
on our way to LA! I will miss our kitties, good thing we have a roommate so they won't get lonely.2:41 AM Aug 6th

When we finally got to the LA area Scott surprised me by taking me to the Santa Monica Pier which I had never been to. We walked on the beach for awhile then walked along the pier.

We ever got to see a pelican soaring around on the air currents.

Around two the aquarium opened up, it was small but very cool. They had little horn and spotted sharks who liked to poke their noses out of the water and dance. One of the little sharks had come from another aquarium that had left him out in the sun. Sadly he now has a permanent black sunburn. We continued to wander around the aquarium till it was time to head to our hotel to check in.

After we checked into the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza we went down to the lobby to meet and chat with other conference attendees.

SCBWI Summer Conference & the Los Gatos Fiesta De Artes

In a few days we’ll be leaving for the SCBWI Summer conference in LA. Even though I’m super busy I thought I’d share with you all the book dummy for Stalking the Elusive Quetzal. I did not send out for this it is 100% printed and assembled here in the studio. I tried really hard to make it look like a real book and I’m very pleased with the results.

Oh and don’t forget!

KatGirl Studio will have a booth at their very first Art and Wine Festival on August 15th & 16th at the Los Gatos Fiesta De Artes in Down Town Lost Gatos. So if you live nearby come out and say hi! We will have a ton of cool items available and the newly completed Stalking the Elusive Quetzal book dummy will be on display.

Over the next few weeks I will be tracing clean copies of the sketched pages and binding them together along with the text in a book dummy. The completed book dummy will them make its debut at the 2009 SCBWI Summer Conference Portfolio Art Show. Who know maybe the story will be picked up by a publisher there. So stay tuned Quetzal fans, Stalking the Elusive Quetzal is well on its way to completion!

Sorry about the lack of updates lately. I’ve been busy working on a children’s book for Canadian publisher Three Bears and cannot post my work until its ready for publication. If you’d like to be notified when that book or any of my other books come out feel free to join our book mailing list by emailing us at Kat@katgirl.net . In the minimal free time I have I’ve been working on Stalking the Elusive Quetzal and my novel series COR (The Chronicles of Rayn). As well I’ve been preparing for the children’s conference and the Art and Wine festival I will be doing this year. This summer has shaped up to do an extremely busy one.

Fanime Wrap Up

Fanime was fantastic and better than last year! It was a really long haul since we had been in our new place less than a week before Famine. We were pleased to see when we showed up this year that we were next to our friends from last year the Toon Twins and Cute Mew (Lisha). I also got to see some former classmates, childhood friends and KatGirl Studio fans from other cons. About our only complaint about Artist Alley was that this year there seemed to be less space behind the tables which made it a little hard for us artists to move round. But all and all the AA staff did a fantastic job!

I want to thank everyone who came by the KatGirl Studio table to support us. As with last year we had many items that sold out. For those who wanted one of those sold out items most will be available through the KatGirl Studio shop very soon. Fanime 2009

Moving, Projects and Computer crash

Sorry about the lack of art lately, I assure you we are actually quite busy at KatGirl Studio. We have been preparing to move (only 2 weeks away), rebuilding the website (it ate itself) and negotiating contracts for major upcoming projects.

Website and Computer Crash… Again
Last month KatGirl Studio’s website decided to rewrite some of its own code (scary I now) taking the whole site down in the process. While in the midst of repairing that problem the studio computer’s 3 month old hard drive decided to kill itself taking everything that wasn’t saved to the external hard drive with it (i.e. the fixed website, 2009 contact list, various sketches and documents for upcoming and in progress projects etc.) This then seemed like an opportune moment to design and create the new sections of the site since the whole site needed to be updated anyways. So stay tuned for KatGirl Studio’s two new site sections.

Moving
KatGirl Studio will be relocating in the next two weeks to a larger space with better lighting. It’s really exciting but a lot of work. Everything that is not important has been packed away in boxes. This of course also means that we will have to file for new permits and Business licenses.

Upcoming Projects
KatGirl Studio is currently in negotiations for a few upcoming projects. However I can’t talk about them just yet. I can however talk about my children’s book, Stalking the Elusive Quetzal. The book creation is progressing along nicely and I hope to have the completed book dummy ready for viewing at Fanime.

Computer Crash and Pixar Portfolio

Computer Crash
This past Saturday I went to turn on my computer and found that it had suffered a PBR 2 system boot failure. I was frantic because I was in the middle of backing up my portfolio work for my Pixar submission. I called my dad who was nice enough to spend all weekend and Monday fixing my computer. Luckily none of my files were damaged and he was able to transfer everything off so he could wipe everything. I am truly lucky to have a computer engineer as a father because now I sit here in front of my computer and it’s as if nothing happened to it. Thanks dad!

This brings up another point, I have become so computer centric in my day to day life that I really didn’t have anything else to do. So I rented and watched the entire first season of the Tudors, Twilight, the Truman Show, and Sense and Sensibility. As well I washed all of my roommates and my clothes and attempted to pack more boxes until I realized we were out of tape.

Pixar Portfolio
I’ve also been working on my portfolio submission for Pixar Studios. Some of you may remember that a few months back I had the opportunity to visit Pixar. All the work is done and mostly printed out (I ran out of ink with 2 pages left) and should be ready to send on its way tomorrow! After that it’s back to client projects and my book Stalking the Elusive Quetzal.

Here is one of the pieces from the portfolio. The original design was intended for a children’s magazine, unfortunately the company went under and the project was never finished. Since I had already done all this design work it was a shame to let it sit so I painted the character and gave her a new name.

Sorry about the late review I came down horribly sick when I got back from the con.

Our Table
The Matted Mini Prints and Mini Color books were a smash hit! In general, the response to my studio’s offerings were good. And due to overwhelming demand KatGirl Studio will be publishing the full length illustrated book Stalking the Elusive Quetzal later this year! We will also hopefully have studio shirts and Kiki plushies by famine since people kept trying to buy the ones we was wearing. If you really wanted one of our items and it A: Sold out or B: you ran out of cash, worry not because most of the items will also be featured in our Etsy shop. I’d like to say thank you to my best pal Sally Rose for being my table rep when I wasn’t there so I could get a chance to walk around.

Mike Mignola
Most of my friends know that as fair a “Super Heroes” go Hell Boy is my fav so I was really exited to be able to meet Hell Boys creater Mike Mignola. There a pretty funny story about how I ended up waiting in line twice to get my book signed and if you want the whole story let me know. But the short story ends with me getting a few things signed and us (me and Mike) doing impressions of our pet cats.

Stan Saki
My roommate owns most of the Usagi Yojimbo graphic novels and the “art of book” and so of course I’ve read all of the ones he has because well there awesome and two train rides become very boring. It’s a not so little know fact that Stan is one of the most hardworking comic artists/cartoonists in the US if not the world. besided getting a few books, posters and the art of book signed I also picked up one of the newer books we didn’t have from dark horse because he (Stan) had sold out already and it was only part of the way through sat.

Tracy Butler
I’ve been following her work since I was in high school and she’s one of the first people I started watching on DA. I really love her comic Lackadaisy and it was a big shock to round a corner and sew one of her characters in sculpture form at a book and then realize she was there and then realize whereas I had admired her for years I had no idea what she looked like. Luckily she was there and I got to tell her how much I loved her work. I also preordered her book because customs has seized their shipment of books for random drug search and they had sold out of the ones they had by 11am on Saturday.

Camilla D’Errico
Camilla among other things is the artist of Nightmares and Fairy Tales. I picked up her book some months back at my friend Anna’s comic store and really liked it. We saw her at APE and I kicked myself for forgetting to bring the book for her to sign. Luckily she was at the con and signed my book. As well her and the writer Serena will be doing a signing later this year at Anna’s store.

David Petersen
David is the artist and writer of Mouse Guard and I picked up a signed copy of his book as well at the con. I’ve only flipped through them a few times at Anna’s store but what I saw made my want to buy it. Who can say no to a book of such cute mice? I’d greatly looking forward to reading his comic.

Other Cool people I met were: Laurie B., Bobby Crosby (writer of Marry Me), Travis Hanson (he drew me a cool cat sketch), Gabrielle Pennacchioli (a Dreamworks animator and he sat next to us in AA), Steph Laberis (cool illustrator who gave me the last of her sold out buttons she found under her table) and many many more.

I’d also like to give lots of hugs to your friend Brian Kolm of Atomic Bear Press who’s father passed away this weekend. Hang in there Brian we’re all here for you.

Each piece is handcrafted here in the studio using aged metal frames, artisan glass and lamp work beads and high quality fine art paper.

Each piece is sealed in a special formula and set to cure while the metal bases are pieced together. Each piece must adhere to a strict quality control before it is mounted on the base and set to dry overnight.

Ice cream and Snow Leopards

SF Etsy Ice Cream Social
On Saturday I went to San Francisco for a SF Etsy ice cream social. It was a joy meeting other artisans in my area. I wore the prototype for soon to be launched line of jewelry and got a really good response from the ladies there.

Yesterday I finished my painting of the Snow leopard and uploaded it and a few new things to my various online communities. It will soon be available as a fine art print and is one of the 12 pieces in my line of wearable art that will soon be launching.

A Day at Pixar

On Monday I had the privilege to visit Pixar Animation Studios for a private tour and portfolio review. A friend of the family, Arun, is a programmer there and was kind enough to take time out of his day to show me around the main studio. Pixar’s main building has a rotating exhibit of the most current movie in the case Wall E and some sections of their older films. It was a great honor to be given a private tour since Pixar is closed to the public and does not give any public tours. People who know me well know I’m a collector of concept and “art of” books and so to see the concept art in person was really exciting and awe inspiring. While we walked around Arun pointed out all of Jay’s (his friend I would meet later) pieces on the walls.

After the tour we met up with his friend Jay for lunch, which was very taste. After lunch Arun had to run to a meeting so Jay, who worked on Star Wars Episode 1 before coming to Pixar 6 years ago, was kind enough the go through my portfolio with me. He offered me some insight on what the directors would be looking for in portfolios and about the hiring process. I know have a better understanding of the difference in what directors look for in book portfolios vs. concept or story artist portfolios. I would like to give a big thanks to both of them and I hope to someday work with them there.

On a different note Pixar has its one store at the studio that sells some special things. I picked up a shirt some Golden books (another thing I collect is children’s books) and this cute plushy box set that was marked at only $10.

American Pride

Today is a landmark day for many reasons. Like many of you out there I watched the 44th Presidential Inauguration, not because I was supposed to or because someone made me, but because I truly wanted too. For years I’ve watched movies in which the presidents inspire confidence, pride and courage in the people they are speaking too. I always wished those people, those characters could be our real president. But today, for the first time I realized that we do get to have one of those awe inspiring people to lead us. To raise us up one again to the country people dream to come to, to the place that some risk their lives to reach. A place where anyone no matter who they are or where they’re from can be anything they desire to be. Today I am proud to be an American.

Wearable Art Creation 2

Today I worked out the final formula for sealing my artwork for the jewelry and how to create the rest. This piece is the first Mini Masterpiece: Into the Woods. This piece features purple artisan speckled glass beads and an antiqued silver stamped frame. The jewelry line is set launch at WonderCon 2009 so stay tuned.

SAC Anime and New Project

SAC Anime was really fun but it left me exhausted, if I can help it I won’t be doing a show alone ever again. I met a lot of really cool people I hope to see again in the future. To all of you who came by the table to pick up some goodies, browse or just say hi thank you for supporting KatGirl Studio. To those who ordered special prints they are in the mail and on their way to you. The coolest thing that happened at the Con was that I got to talk to Tom Kane who voiced Yoda in the most recent Star Wars movie along with a lot of other characters from shows I watched as a kid. My friend’s dad was kind enough to wait in line to have my light saber signed for me since I was stuck at the table. I've uploaded the pictures I took to my FaceBook feel free to tag someone if you know them. oh ya and aparently the shirt I'm wearing in the above pic was in an episode of Heros.

I know it’s a bit last notice but I just found out yesterday that we got a table at SAC Anime. Because of the short notice my roommate won’t be able to make it so I have the table all to myself. KatGirl Studio will be at table #16 in the Small Press Zone. I will also have our new table pet Huginn Valravn (Hue-in Val-riven) so stop by to find out what he is. I’ll have prints, Giclees, fine art prints, print tests (artist proofs), and buttons. Sometime in the middle of each day I will also be giving mini book demos so please stop by and say hi!
